Montessori Education System

"Your child is not a number to us, but a centre of all the activities we do."

International boundaries are growing smaller, businesses are becoming global and school education is becoming essential to adopt to the face of a changing work environment.  So it has become imperative to equip our students with necessary knowledge, skills and values right from the beginning.  In this context, MEBS team is sincerely committed to giving total quality education to its students in a homely and inspiring environment.  Education here is a fun and a trill and joy to our students rather than a burden and boredom.  So our focus is always on smart teaching-learning activities by creating a curiosity so that they will continue to learning process as long as they live.  Our children are given a harmonious environment through exploration, discovery, innovation and creativity, which shall connect education to our students' future lives.

Marvellous English Boarding School (MEBS), located at Maitidevi Chowk, Kathmandu, stands resolutely creating stories of success one after another.  Recently, MEBS has started Montessori Pre-School program, too.  Emerging as one the leading private boarding schools in Nepal, it has inspired the students who want to pursue total quality education – the education that will equip our students with new visions and innovative in-sights.  The standard of the school is appreciated by our valued parents and well-wishers.  In order to enhance the quality of education as per global need, we have been conducting various inter-disciplinary activities – project and mini research-driven works, applications of innovative and critical thinking ideas etc. on regular basis.  Finally, I can say that if you gave us a child of three years, we will return you with an MA degree.

2.About Montessori Education System:

Montessori teaching is a scientific way of being committed to laws of nature with children to support their true natural development. It emphasizes on independence, freedom within limits, and respects for a child's natural, psychological, physical, and social development. This distinctive new education system was first discovered by Dr. Maria Montessori in Rome, Italy in the early 1900’s, which eventually came to be known as Montessori Teaching.

3.Our Mission:

Our mission is to provide each child with an individualized, holistic program that meets their specific needs.  It is true that each child learns differently, has different interests and develops cognitive and social skills at his own pace.  So by addressing individual needs, our specialized materials, prepared environment, and teaching approach guide each child to success and realization of their full potential.  It is an important milestone, we believe, in our history:  THE BIRTH OF MONTESSORI EDUCATION AT MARVELLOUS.

4.Class Size and Environment:

Everything is designed to enhance each child's natural inquisitiveness and desire to learn.  There are very limited children, aged from 2 to 6 years, in a class in mixed age-groups, staffed by a trained teacher and an assistant.

5.The Curriculum:

It is designed to nurture cognitive, emotional and social skills during their highly impressionable years.  The aim is, therefore, to focus the child on understanding what is being learned, not just to gather facts, as with traditional education.

6.Montessori Practices:

  a. The Prepared Environment: The environment is designed to facilitate maximum independent learning and exploration by the child.  The    child is presented with a variety of activities as well as a great deal of movement.  They can work on activities of their own choice at their own pace.  They experience a blend of freedom and self-discipline in a place especially designed to meet their developmental needs.

   b. Freedom and Discipline:Each child is given the freedom of choice and use to manifest his tendencies to repeat, to explore or manipulate.

   c. Respect for the Child:This is the corner-stone. Teachers help the children do things and learn for themselves as per their own choice.  This will help them develop the skills and abilities necessary for effective learning autonomy and positive self-esteem.

   d. The Absorbent and Sensitive Period:  At this age, a child absorbs knowledge directly into his psychic life.  What he learns depends greatly on his teachers, experiences and environments. So we will try our best to give them maximum exposure to the learning environment. They are free to explore materials of their own choosing, which helps absorb what they found there.

   e. Auto-education:  Children are capable of educating themselves, which is called auto-education or self-education.  Children who are actively involved in prepared environment and who exercise freedom of choice literally educate themselves.  Montessori teachers prepare classrooms according to this principle so that children educate themselves.

7.Montessori Apparatus:

The child encounters a series of objects, scientifically designed to satisfy both the need for practical life activity and intellectual hunger of the child in the fields of basic mathematic, writing and reading, general knowledge, animate and inanimate environment in time and space. They are based on 4 groups:

    (i) Exercise of Practical Life: These apparatuses consist of household items which the child sees in everyday life.  The need for personal cleanliness like soap,nail-clipper, brush and towel, duster, mirror, comb, napkins, accessories for shoes, brush and broom, etc. and exercises such as pouring, buttoning, lacing shoes, buckling belts etc. are also introduced.
(ii) Sensorial Apparatus: This group provides various means for the development of senses of light, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting etc.
(iii) Apparatus for Arithmetic: Different attractive rods, sand-paper figures, number cards, colourful beads, counting frames, multiplication and strip boards and test tubes etc. are given for addition, subtraction, division and fraction.
(iv) Apparatus for Language: Reading and writing activities are introduced through sandpaper letters and other letters and charts.

8.The Teacher's Role:

Our trained, smart and well-experienced teachers do not give fish to the children, but help them learn fishing skills. Their role is to guide the child without letting him feel his presence too much.  The teacher implements the child-centered approach in which he encourages children with respect to learn by making our children the centre of learning.

Thus Montessori is a revolutionary method of observing and supporting the natural development of children. Montessori educational practice helps children develop creativity, problem solving, critical thinking and time-management skills, care of the environment and each other, and prepares them to contribute to the society and to become fulfilled persons. As a result, Montessori Education is the fastest growing and most successful method of education today all over the world.
