Admission Process and Requirements
Any student holding an Intermediate or +2 degree in Science with at least 50% marks can apply for admission in BSc Biochemistry program. The college will organize an Entrance Exam and confirm the admission
|

Scholarship Scheme
The top scorers with at least 60% marks in the PU Board Exam will get scholarship as per the guidelines of Pokhara University.

Evaluation System:
A student's performance in a course is evaluated in two processes:
1. Internally by the concerned faculty member through quizes, tutorials, laboratory works, home assignments, class tests, class participation, term paper, etc.
2. Externally by the University through semester end examinations. In general 50% weight is given to internal evaluation. The other 50% weight is given to final semester end examination. The grades (marks) awarded to a student in a course are based on their consolidated performance in both these types of evaluations.
|
| |
e. |
Grading System:
If a student cannot finish all the required works for the Course only in very rare and unusual circumstances, he or she may be awarded an incomplete grade ‘I’. If all the required works are not completed within the following semester, the Grade of ‘I’ will be automatically converted into ‘F’. The performance of a student is evaluated in terms of two indices: a) the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) which is the Grade Point Average for the Semester and b) the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) which is the Grade Point Average for all completed semesters.

The college has got its own research lab at the college under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Vishwanath Pd. Agrawal, a university professor to enable undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates to do basic research in biological sciences. Present research activities in the college are: Study of genetic diversity of actinomycetes from Mt. Everest. Study of diversity of Bacillus thuringiensis from Manang. Micropropagation of Pinus roxburghii by inverted embryo technique and genetic and biochemical characterization of the steps involved. Screening of Genetically Modified Plants. Study of sodium azide induced Gain-of-function mutation in Actinomycetes. |

Completion of the First Batch:
The first batch (2002 – 2006) has competed the B. Sc. Degree. The notable point is that all undertook research projects and did pretty well. The highest CGPA obtained was 3.92, 48% got CGPA of 3.0 or higher and 52% got CGPA below 3.0. |

Placement of Students:
So far, 10 students have been admitted to foreign universities for higher studies; some are waiting for the good news and some applying for US Universitites. |
| |
l. |
Research Opportunity Abroad:
Under an MOU we send students to Protein Network Research Center (PNRC), Yonsei University for carrying out research projects in their 8th semester. In 2006 two students went there. Their good performance resulted in sending six students this year. |
| |
m. |
Strengthening of Laboratory Work:
Effective from this year we have cancelled the requirement of maintaining a fair practical notebook which we think is sheer wastage of time. Instead, our students are required to keep a comprehensive record of their lab activities. From next academic session we will include two groups of inter connected experiments in lab work. |
| |
n. |
Strengthening of Research:
Since we have well experienced faculty and we use most recent textbooks and have access to internal and search facilities, we are doing very well in theoretical portion. As our motto is to bring a scientific revolution in the country, we emphasize that teaching and research should go hand –in-hand. As a result, we keep upgrading our search facilities and try to procure chemicals and glass-wares as soon as need arises. |
| |
o. |
Switch to Objective System:
From the present academic year we have moved to the Objective system (Multiple Choices) for the internal examination. This allows us to publish the results within a few days of the exam. External Exams taken by Pokhara University still follow the traditional pattern. Statistical analysis has indicated that both objective and traditional patterns yield comparable results except 3 subjects. We will convince Pokhara University to adopt Objective system in the external exams as well. |
| |
p. |
Survey of Students' Opinion:
From this academic year we have intensively tried to find out the students' opinion about our academic performance and what they think about the quality of education in USC. The special feature of this survey is that the students are asked not to write their names on the survey forms. In one survey, we found out that 100% of the students would recommend USC to their friends and relatives. About 45% found USC a better institution than other similar institutions in the country. We also discovered that majority of students want to study pharmaceutical chemistry in place of physics. |
| |
q. |
Use of Blogs:
In order to involve students in the process of interaction and letting them know the results of internal examination, we have created two blogs. ( and. (http://uscbiochemistry.blogspot.com and http://researchlabforbiotechbiochem.blogspot.com |
| |
r. |
Research Accomplishments:
We think that the country badly needs scientific research, which can be brought about by scientists only. As a matter of fact, we are in the process of creating scientists. I assert that each and every student who has passed from USC is a scientist, because he or she understands the importance of research in solving country's problems. They can do meaningful research and present their work in a systematic way. In a matter of two years, we have discovered the phenomenon of sodium azide induced mutation in Streptomyces, Characterization of endotoxin gene in Bt, identification
of antibiotic producing actinomyces species, study of protease from lapsi etc. We may be the first institution where HINARI and AGORA are routinely used through the internet for finding out the most needed research papers. |
| |
s. |
Regular Seminars:
As usual, seminars on interested topics were presented by students. This fall a compendium of the abstracts was published which is available from the office. |

MSc Program:
We have applied for the affiliation of M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Ph.D. program and we hope that Pokhara University will provide the affiliation in the near future. |
